Furniture arrangement do's and dont's

by Rochester 22 July 2019

Ever wondered if there was a golden rule or a set of do’s and don’ts when it comes to furniture arrangement? Below are a few pointers to get you started on decorating the home of your dreams.

Arranging furniture is probably one of the most daunting tasks when it comes to creating a cozy and comfortable home, but, when done just right, it is also the most rewarding exercise. Walking into a room and everything is in the right place is a fulfilling experience. Knowing that not only is your furniture making the most of your space, it is also aesthetically pleasing and functional can be truly satisfying.

In the living room, choose a focal point, this can be in the form of a view, your couch or a favorite painting. Having a focal point helps set the tone of the room as everything else added on will be built around it.

Try to avoid putting your furniture against the wall, especially your couches. Even leaving a small distance, about 30cm, helps create the illusion of a bigger space

Another important thing when decorating your living room is ensuring you have small tables next to your seating space where guests can put their drinks down. You don’t want your guests having to hold on to their drinks or whatever snacks you’ve offered them for a long time.

Create conversation areas where people won’t have to crane their necks or shout to hear each other, while also leaving plenty of space between your furniture pieces. About 40-60 cm should do, this allows you to create flow and make the room feel light and airy, no matter how small the space.

In the bedroom, the bed should always take center stage. This means choosing a good quality bed, while also taking into consideration the room measurements in proportion to the bed size. You don't want to get a bulky bed that takes up all the space in your room.

One popular placement of the bed is in the center of the wall across from the door. This makes the bed the focal point of the room. Another good choice for your bed is along the longest wall in the bedroom. Try not to block the natural light with your headboard, and ensure your power sockets are conveniently located.

If your bedroom is small, think about buying pieces that serve multi-purposes or save space. Try a bunk-desk combination, which has a high bed with a desk beneath it. Or try a storage bed if you don't have space for a dresser.

Aside from a bed and a wardrobe, you can also add pedestals, a desk, a bookshelf, or ottomans, depending on your space and preference.

Try to avoid clutter and leave plenty of room between furniture.

While this list may not be exhaustive, these are but some of the things you can do to make furniture work for the space you have.
